Interesting Facts

Hirsch, Zobing Riesling is a well-structured, versatile gastronomic wine created in an easy-to-drink style. The grapes for its production are grown around the wine-growing town of Zöbing, which is located right at the foot of the Heiligenstein mountain on the Urgestein rock. The vines are cultivated by biodynamic methods according to the RESPEKT certificate - AT-BIO-402. Harvested by hand from selected terraced vineyards around Zöbing to give the wine a classic dry style with mineral notes and fruity purity. The 2019 harvest was completely healthy, ripe and surprisingly juicy. The grapes were removed from the vines early in the morning to avoid the hot midday temperatures. Thus, the grapes entered for pressing chilled, whole bunches. Fermentation and maturation of wine took place in stainless steel tanks. The 2019 Riesling has a very classic, meaty flavor with ripe acidity and great storage potential.

Producer's description

The Hirsch family took over the old estate in the Kammern district in 1878 and are now managing it for the fifth generation. According to custom, it all started with mixed farming, in which grapes played a role along with many other field crops. This continued until the late 1970s, when the father of Johannes Hirsch, the current owner, realized that specialized viticulture definitely had a bright future in a region so beloved by nature like Kamptal. Josef Hirsch, Johannes's father, originally inherited 2.5 hectares of vineyards from his father. Almost immediately, he acquired new vineyards. He bought plots that no one else wanted to own. More precisely, at the top of Heiligenstein, and not at the bottom, where you can work easily and efficiently. The neighbors thought he was crazy. But their confidence in their actions made the Hirsch family a leading wine producer in Kamptal.

Johannes Hirsch turned fourteen when his father made a far-reaching decision and in accordance with it formed his own life plan. In 1996, the father and his supporter son concluded that more attention should be paid to the true strengths of the enterprise. As Johannes put it, "We knew we shouldn't be wrong." At the height of the red wine boom in 1999, they bred all red grapes, replacing them with Riesling and Gruner Veltliner. Today Johannes Hirsch runs the estate with his father, mother and very active wife Sandra.
"I have a deep love for my region and its soils. I could not make wine anywhere else in the world, because my wines are determined by a sense of origin and draw their character from the soil. These are wines for sophisticated connoisseurs, for the patient and devoted, who will give wine the time it takes to flourish " - Johannes Hirsch.
