Interesting Facts

"Franz Josef" Bayerisch Helles is a soft and pleasantly hopped light Bavarian lager. A delight for all beer lovers who appreciate the Bavarian style of brewing.

According to tradition, Franz Josef was the eldest son of the master brewer of the Bavarian village brewery in Eschenbach at the end of the 19th century. As a true Bavarian, he was naturally also a marksman in the local shooting club. Although he had already won the hearts of all the young girls, he also wanted to become the king of shooting. When the current king of shooting and the local farmer died overnight, and the annual traditional shooting festival was just around the corner, Franz Josef came close to fulfilling his long-held dream. At that time, it was customary for the new king of shooting to treat the entire village to beer in honor of his victory. It was also customary to always let the one who could afford such an honor win. Being astute, the villagers allowed Franz Josef to win the tournament. And so it went on for many years. As a young brewer, Franz Josef was at the origin of the excellent Bavarian beer from Eschenbach, which was famous for its taste and limited brewing volumes. The beer brewed there soon became known simply as "Franz Josef" Helles . Today, Eschenbacher brewers once again call their best Helles "Franz Josef" in the old tradition.

Producer's description

The Eschenbacher private brewery is the work of eight generations who have painstakingly shaped its history. Firmly rooted in their homeland, they have remained faithful to farming alongside their work as brewers for nearly two centuries. The first Eschenbacher beer was brewed in 1750 in the small village of Eschenbach by Georg Johann Wagner. He brewed beer for himself and his fellow citizens here according to the conditions of the time and, without looking to the future, created the conditions for today's Eschenbacher private brewery. His son, brewer and village mayor Johann Georg Wagner, founded an inn on the main road from Schweinfurt to Bamberg, where his beer, initially intended only for his own consumption and consumption in the village, soon became popular. This inn, known as the "Eschenbacher Bräustübla", is still a popular local institution today.

In the mid-20th century, the expansion of business connections in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and the Palatinate, as well as the associated beer production, required almost continuous dedication, constant construction projects and investments to expand and modernise the business. Neighbouring properties were acquired in order to adapt the company's capacity to the growing demand for Eschenbacher beer. Since 1 January 1995, the sole owner and manager of the company has been Karl Werner Wagner (Karl V), who continues to lead it with the same sense of responsibility with which his ancestors began. Environmental protection is one of the top priorities of the private Eschenbacher Brewery, which has completely renewed its existing CO2 capture system. As a result of special investments, the brewery was awarded a certificate in 2009 for saving 60,000 kg of CO2. At the beginning of the 21st century, the brewery underwent extensive modernisation. The brewhouse was equipped with a state-of-the-art wort boiling system, which boils the wort even more gently. Soon after, the bottling line was re-equipped with new packers and unpackers, as well as bottle and crate conveyors. For even more gentle filtration of the beer, a diatomaceous earth filter was installed in 2004, equipped with the latest generation control system.
Today, the Eschenbacher brewery has a clear goal: to remain a modern and successful brewery in one of Germany's most traditional beer regions by investing in technology, quality and marketing. In March 2021, the brewery launched the new monobrand "Franz Josef".
