Producer's description
Traquair is the oldest inhabited manor in Scotland, one of the popular tourist destinations, an ancient castle built over 900 years ago, owned by the Stuart family since ancient times. In the 1700s, a brewery was created at the castle. At that time, it was very well equipped - 200 gallon boilers, Russian oak barrels for fermentation. The brewery produced several varieties of ale, which was popular in the 18th century, was considered cheap, they even paid the clerks of the castle! But by the beginning of the 1800s, maintaining a brewery had become too much of a luxury for the Stuart family. It was closed and turned into a warehouse of unnecessary things.
Only in 1965, Lord Peter Maxwell Stewart discovered a brewery under the centuries-old junk that she managed to grow. With surprise, he discovered that the entire collection of dishes and equipment was preserved intact. Lord Peter got down to business, he put things in order, invited brewery friend Sandy Hunter from Belhaven Brewery, and with him developed a recipe for traditional Scottish ale based on family archives and an old recipe. For several years, Peter Stewart refined his recipe. These first bottles are now collectible.
In the 1970s, the quality of beer became stable, the brewery was recognized. Since the 1980s, the company has established export of beer to the United States, and then to Japan. In 1990, Catherine Maxwell Stewart took over the brewery after the death of her father. The Tracair Brewery tries to use local ingredients, with the exception of hops. The first beer was “Tracair” House Ale, later they began to produce “Tracair” Jacobit El. Currently, the brewery produces about 250,000 bottles a year, approximately 60% of the products are exported to the USA, Canada, Japan, Italy, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Russia.
