Producer's description
The Chateau Kefraya estate, located in the western part of the Bekaa Valley, has been owned by the Boustros family for several generations. The castle was built in 1946 on an artificial hill that the Romans used centuries ago to monitor the movement of their troops.
The founder of the winery, visionary Michel de Boustros, planted the first vines in 1951. In 1979, despite the civil war in Lebanon (1975-1990), Chateau Kefray's estate begins to produce wine from grapes grown in its own vineyards and vinified in its own cellar.
The vineyard is spread on the slopes of more than 300 hectares at an altitude of 1000 meters above the Mediterranean Sea, at the foot of Mount Baruk in the Bekaa Valley. It crosses the Yammune tectonic fault, the source of a wide variety of terroirs, some of which date back to the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Clay-limestone, clay-chalk, as well as sandy and gravelly soils make up a real mosaic.
In addition to a variety of soils, Cheteau Kefraya uses a wide range of grapes in its blends, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay and Viognier, and more unusual varieties such as Carmenere, Marselan and Muscat a Petit Grain. The vineyards also grow local varieties such as Obeidi, Merva and Mekssesse, as well as the revival of ancient historical Lebanese red varieties such as Assuad Karech and Asmi Noir.
