Interesting Facts
"Aphros" Vinhão is an extremely gastronomic and persistent red biodynamic wine made from the rare Portuguese autochthonous grape variety Vignao. Vines are grown in Lima, in the Vigno Verde sub-region. The vineyard with an area of more than 20 hectares has a southern exposure. The harvest of 2018 was harvested from September 14 to October 9. The grapes are stamped and pressed. Fermentation and maceration on the skin take place in granite vats and tanks at a temperature of 20 to 22 ºC. After malolactic fermentation in steel tanks, the wine is aged in them on the lees, slightly filtered and bottled.
Producer's description
The architect Vasco Croft, born in Lisbon, studied pedagogy and sculpture in England, where he also found an interest in woodworking and furniture design. Returning to Portugal, he led the Waldorf movement for many years with his own furniture design company. At thirty, Vasco met with a Buddhist monk who gave him a bottle of wine and talked for a long time about the deep spiritual meaning of wine and its effect on humans. This event, perceived by Vasco as a personal meeting with Dionysus, prompted him to start the Aphros Wine wine project in Casal do Paso in 2003, in an old half-forgotten house owned by his family since the 17th century. Once upon a time a variety of crops and grapes were grown here on a farm. But in 2004, Vasco found the farm abandoned and practically uninhabited - there were only three people left, two of whom were over 80 years old.
Vasco did a great job restoring the house and the vineyards, which since 2006 he began to process exclusively on the principles of biodynamics, as well as constructing a new building of the Aphros Wine winery. Today the farm is a holistic ecosystem, on the territory of which you can see eucalyptus trees, acacia, oaks, meet wild boars, foxes and eagles. Biodiversity is actively maintained, and all species of animals and plants are carefully protected.
