Producer's description

Golden State Vintners is one of the largest companies in the USA, which produces high-quality wines, and also offers a number of services in the field of winemaking (grape processing, aging in barrels and storage, supply of grapes) to the largest wineries in California and a number of international wineries. Golden State Vintners is a state-owned company headquartered in Napa, California. The company is also the second largest brandy producer in the United States.

The history of the company began back in 1934 when its founder, Arpaksat Sox Setrakyan, appreciated the potential of California and planted the Golden State vineyard in Tulare County, California. Northern California's climate turned out to be especially suitable for certain grape varieties, and for several decades the company has earned a reputation as a producer of high-quality wines and until the 1980s remained a family business that served mainly local consumers. With increasing popularity among consumers, competition intensified, and companies such as Gallo and Sutter Home began to gain dominance over small regional vineyards. Although many small companies were absorbed, Setrakyan's company remained independent. In 1981, Setrakyan's grandson Jeffrey O'Neill joined the management of Golden State Vintners, bringing the company much-needed energy. After attracting outside investors to finance the restructuring of the company, O'Neill and his partners launched an aggressive campaign to transform Golden State Vintners from a small family business into a large company. Such a transition required not only a change of leadership, but also an increase in the area allotted for vineyards. In 1985, the company made its first real breakthrough in wholesale sales when Gallo Wines signed a contract with Golden State to supply several tons of mass grapes of premium grapes. The contract was extended for several years, and soon Golden State began to gain a reputation in the wine industry as a reliable wholesale producer of high-quality grapes at a reasonable price. By 1987, the company had acquired a significant vineyard plot in Central Valley and positioned itself as one of the leading suppliers of bottling wine, owning a winery in Fresno. In subsequent years, Golden State Vintners acquired wineries in Monterey, Ridley, and the Napa Valley. Today, the company owns five wineries and nearly 10,000 acres of vineyards, including vineyards in the Napa Valley, Monterey County and San Joaquin Valley. The company annually produces more than 225,000 tons of varietal grapes. The company also began exporting its products to European markets and by 1998 had become California's largest exporter of premium premium bulk wines.
