The first red wine, released in 1970 winery Simonsig, it was "Pinotage". Frans Malan became a pioneer in the use of small French oak barrels for aging "Pinotage". Today, this variety occupies most of the vineyards planted on several farms, one of which is the famous vineyard Redhill - "Red Hill", which is characterized by red soils of slate. These great-drained soil with a unique ability to retain moisture are considered the best for growing grapes for red wine premium "Redhill Pinotage".

After two days of cold maceration of the berries have been short, but intense ferment in open-top fermenters, with manual punching cap every two to three hours for optimum fruit and color. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 16 months in new oak barrels, of which 62% - the French, 38% - from American white oak.
