Interesting Facts
Moric, Blaufrankisch Burgenland, 2015 - a fragrant, classic, elegant entry-level wine that opens the world to you in a great range of wines from Roland Velich. Despite its position in the hierarchy of Velich's assortment, this wine has tremendous, incredibly accurate organoleptic characteristics and an excellent price. Grapes of Blaufrankisch (or Gama) for the production of this wine is collected from vines with a very limited yield, which gives the fruit a concentrated taste and a rich aroma. After fermentation, the wine is aged for twelve months in oak barrels. Roland Velich specially maintains wine in contact with the yeast precipitate for a short time, and for aging chooses large, used wooden barrels to create a modern Blaufrankish without bright notes of wood and toast.
Producer's description
Roland Velich was born in a traditional and very successful family of winemakers from the Apetlon commune in Burgenland. For many years the family has created some of the most famous white wines in Austria. Roland could ease his life and find a great job in the family business, but he decided otherwise and went his own way. In 2001, Roland began his project "Moric" . His goal was to create "from scratch" wines, expressing their origin to the smallest detail. He wanted to create originals, not copies of the great wines of the world. Wines that are produced with minimal interference, as far as possible, are not distorted by modern winemaking technologies. Through trials and searches, he came to the conclusion that only Blaufrankisch grape grown in the cool climate of Burgenland could be the basis for its original wines.
Velih invented the elegant and beautiful style of Blaufrankisch, in which the wood does not dominate, but only emphasizes the variety beauty. Thus, the wines of Roland Velich were largely opposite to what the Austrian market and local wine criticism demanded. They caused a lot of controversy, including condemnation. And Roland himself at the beginning of his career was a bit like a prophet in his country, working with some refusal from the rules and contempt for the foundations. Fifteen years later, many young wine growers followed suit, and the style of his wines is now considered a role model. The team of Robert Parker, the most influential wine critic in the world over the past 20 years, recognized the potential of Moritz wines very early and in 2006 rated the Neckenmarkter Alte Rebe 95 points. To date, this is the highest rating of Austrian red wine. Now the domestic wine press shares this assessment and sprinkles Moritz wines with awards and praise.
