Category Orvieto DOC was awarded in 1971, and over the past forty years, the region has experienced unprecedented growth: here today, produced some of the most popular Italian white wines in the world. On Orvieto DOC accounted for about three-quarters of the total wine production in Umbria. The region is divided into Orvieto Classico, which occupies the land around the tuff rock where the city of Orvieto, Orvieto and that is located on the northern and southern outskirts of the region. The soil is of volcanic origin, combined with a favorable and unique microclimate provide excellent conditions for vineyards.

In 2002, Piero Antinori's name was inscribed in the Hall of Fame Wine Spectator magazine for the greatest contribution to the promotion of Italian wines in the world.
