Producer's description
The Italian cooperative Erste and Neu Kellerey and its vineyards are located in the province of Trentino-Alto Adige. This is the northernmost wine-growing region in Italy. Thanks to its complex geopolitical history, it consists of two autonomous provinces: Trentino and Alto Adige. Trentino is almost entirely made up of native Italians, while Alto Adige has a predominantly German- and Russian-speaking population. This is due to the region's former status within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, from which it seceded in 1919. The wines of this region bear the imprints of a cultural and political past, sometimes dramatic and truly complex. While Germanic varieties (such as Mühler-Thurgau and Silvaner) reigned supreme in some vineyard areas, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon Blanc were in full swing in the still-untouched lands. Thus, the province of Trentino-Alto Adige is the only Italian region whose vineyard area has increased significantly over the last quarter of the twentieth century.
The beginning of the twentieth century in the province of Trentino-Alto Adige was marked by the creation of a cooperative of winemakers, the main goal of which was to produce high-quality wines from harvests from their own vineyards, with their subsequent sale. In 1925, the head office of the new winery was opened, located near the railway in Alto Adige. In 1986, the Erste ("first") cooperative, created in 1900, merged with the "Neue" ("new") winery, which began operations in 1925. This is how the South Tyrolean winery Erste & Neue Kellerei was born. Today, the members of the cooperative are more than 500 winegrowers, who meticulously and carefully cultivate their vineyards, and then deliver magnificent harvests to the winery. The cultivated area in the province of Alto Adige covers 280 hectares and is home to both the autochthonous varieties Gewürztraminer, Lagrein and La Schiava, as well as the international varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Merlot. Particular attention should be paid to the Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon varieties, which are especially good in this region. The wines of the Italian cooperative Erste & Neue Kellerei have their own character, rich aroma and refined taste.
