Caol Ila - the distillery, located in the north-eastern part of Ila, near the port Askeyg. Caol Ila was built in 1846 by Hector Henderson, who also owned the old factory Camlachie in Glasgow. This is a rather isolated place Henderson was chosen not by chance - in the neighborhood is situated Loch Nam Bam, known for its clear water. In 1926, the year Caol Ila became the property of DCL. Distillery almost never stops working, except for the period from 1930 to 1937. In 1972, the distillery was completely reconstructed. Preserved only old warehouses filled at the moment maturing whiskey. Some experts make a clear distinction between the heavy "old" Whisky Caol Ila, which was produced until 1972, and a light, a pure spirit, which was distilled after the enlargement in 1974. In 1986, the Caol Ila distillery came to the United Vinokourov.
The inspiration and the driving force of the company stands Alchemist Gordon Wright. He has a wealth of experience with single malt whiskey, because he had to work on a distillery Springbank, he put his hand to the revival of Bruichladdich. But the experience of Wright is not limited, as it has a wealth of knowledge about other classical alcoholic beverages. The first branded Alchemist saw the light of single malt whiskey Highland Park and Macallan, Christian Drouin Calvados and Armagnac Chateau de Castex. But Gordon Wright is not going to stop there, his plans include expansion of the range brand Alkemist variety of alcoholic beverages, aged in oak barrels.
