Garganega is a white wine grape found in Veneto, a region of North East Italy. This variety is famous, not as a grape but as the wine styles: Soave and Gambellara. While these wines are renowned, the grape is not so well known among wine lovers. This is due to Soave’s bottle labeling, as they are brand-centric, making no mention of their grape base. This is likely because the name isn’t cultured, pretty, or easily pronounced.

Garganega based wines are best known for being dry, and have aromatics of almond, baked apricot, baked golden apples, and peach blossoms.

This versatile grape is also capable of producing sweet wines, especially when made from dried grapes, harvested late in the season. Soave and Gambellara produce these sweet wines, known commonly as: Recioto. These wines are rich in texture with aromatics of honey, sweet spices, lemon peel, and tropical fruits. WineStyle recommends this affordable wine with: mussels, roast zucchini stuffed with goat cheese, sticky rice with mango (Recioto).

Garganega is known for its predictably large harvests. The grape clusters are loosely knit, allowing ventilation, which reduces the risks of fungal disease. These long loose bunches dry quickly, making the variety ideal for Recioto wines.

Genetic testing shows Garganega is the same grape variety as: Grecanico Dorato. Between these two names (same species) it is the most planted grape in Italy, and the oldest. It is also the forefather of several other grape varieties, including Dorana di Venezia, of Veneto.

There are very few grape varieties that allow winemakers freedom to choose quality vs. quantity as well as Garganega. In restricting the vines naturally prodigious harvest, they are rewarded with grapes of a very high quality, making a more perfected wine. If they allow the vines to grow unchecked, this results in more wine, if at a lower quality.

There are vineyards in Italy devoted almost solely to Garganega, and producing Soave wines. This is considered Soave’s heartland, and is known as the Soave Classico Zone. These wines have been prized since the 6th Century. Cassiodorus (a roman statesman, serving under the rule of King Theoderic the Great) once described the wine as “White and pure as a lily.” Buy this anciently beloved wine at a good price from our online shop, our delivery fast and your sale is always a guaranteed purchase.
