Chile only became recognised for winemaking very recently. There are many factors that have over time made Chile among the top wine producers in the world, which is a great achievement. One of the contributing factors is that Chilean soils are rich in copper and therefore these vineyards survived the Phlloxera epidemic when most others couldn't. This could also be because Chile as a country is quite isolated.

Due to the richness in soil and excellent irrigation, top French varieties of grapes including Chardonnay, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc thrive in Chile. This, along with extensive foreign investment in production led to the proliferation of wine making in Chile. Chile wineries offered quality wine at a more affordable price, which have made Chilean wines some of the most popular wines on the market.

About twenty different grape varieties have been identified in Chile. Of all the varieties, Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon is considered to be the most elegant with rich accents and a delicate taste.

Chile has five main wine making regions:

• The Atacama region produces wine from table grapes. It is closest to the equator, being in the north of Chile. Wines from this region include Vino Copiapino and Pajarete.
• The Coquimbo region has three sub regions that make the most commercially viable varieties like Syrah.
• The Aconcagua region is well known for its red wines. Casablanca within the Aconcagua region provides excellent conditions for growing Chardonnay.
• Valle Central is the oldest wine region in Chile; Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in this region.
• The region of del Surin in the south is well known for Riesling, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.

Chilean wines were originally known to be quite sweet in taste. However, there has recently been a revolution in Chilean wines. Blessed with good soil and climatic conditions that vary from north to south, Chilean wines have a certain flamboyance and flair which makes them stand out wines on the market.

Exquisite French and Spanish grape varieties have taken root in the Chilean soils. This can be attributed to rich nutritious soil and the fact that Chile has been quick to adapt and invest in more modern production methods. This has had a significant impact on wine production in all of the five wine making regions.

Chilean wines have been categorised according to year, Speral — 2 to 3 years, Reserve — 4 to 5 years, and Grand Wine — 6 years or more. Another classification system has been developed to classify wines according to geography and characteristics. For example Costa, which is a coastal wine with sharp and fruity notes, Entre Cordilleras, which is more balanced and from mountainous vineyards, and Andas — which is considered the most exquisite of all Chilean wines from the Andean mountains.
