Masataka Taketsuru - the future founder of the distillery, "Nikka", was born in 1894 in the city of Takeharu, near Hiroshima. His family owned a small production of sake, which led its history since 1733, and which still exists today. So the question, what will the Masataka did not stand. He studied diligently and trained at university as a chemist, preparing to lead the family business. However, the long trip to Scotland in 1918 turned not only the young Masataka plans, but also his life. From this trip he brought a young wife and a passion for whiskey. In Scotland, Masataka enrolled at the University of Glasgow and became the first Japanese ever studied the art of making whiskey. He took a course in chemistry and practiced as an apprentice at the distillery to obtain first-hand knowledge of the master and trained as blenders. Masataka later become known as the Master Blender. In 1920 Masataka returned to Japan with his wife Jessie. Prior to the creation of their own plants Taketsuru apply their knowledge and experience in the distillery company "Kotobukiya", which in 1923 signed a 10-year contract. Twice he went to France and the UK, studying the processes of manufacture of whiskey and wine. In 1934 Taketsuru built his first factory in Yoshi, who has always been considered an ideal place for the production of whiskey, in many respects similar to Scotland to its mountain landscape, harsh climate and numerous peat bogs. In the same year he created his first whiskey here - "Nicca". Later, Masataka opened another plant - "Miyyagikio" in the north of the archipelago. In addition, the company "Nikka" owns Scottish distillery Ben Nevis and the factory Dompierre in the Cognac region.
Today, "Nikka" ranked second in Japan for the production of whiskey. Taketsuru tried to keep Scottish style and tradition in the production of whiskey distillation cubes on plants are very similar to Scotch whiskey matured in oak barrels. Currently, all covenants Masataka Taketsuru observes his nephew.
The company's product line is very wide - there are both single malt and blended whiskey. In 2002, the plant in Yoshi became the first Japanese plant, obtain a certificate from SMWS (Scotch Malt Whisky Society).
