Interesting Facts

"Orphan Bank" - Australian wine from the Barossa Valley. Part of Shiraz vines, planted back in 1860, were rescued from the uprooting and transplanted into the land owned by Langmeil. They were called "orphan" or orphans. The exceptional quality of the grapes, fertile soil, ideal weather conditions provide an excellent crop of Shiraz, which reflects the unique features of the terroir. The berries are harvested by hand. After fermentation, the wine is left to mature in French oak barrels for two years. At the peak of ripeness vintage 2012 will be from 2014 to 2029.

Producer's description

The land on which now houses the winery Langmeil, was purchased by 36-year-old German blacksmith Christian Aurihtom. Together with his family in 1838. He arrived in South Australia, emigrated from Silesia to escape religious persecution. That Christian planted the first vines on the estate and vineyard "The Freedom 1843" with Shiraz vines today is the oldest vineyard in South Australia. The winery was then called "Paradale". In 1969, after the death of his grandson Christian - Arthur, the family begins to sell the property, and in 1972 the winery acquiring company "Bernkastel".

Eighties of the XX century were very difficult for the wine industry in Australia. Export sales accounted for less than 20% of the total production, and the industry was faced with a surplus of grapes. South Australian Government has submitted a program under which producers pay for the removal of unwanted vines. In 1988 the company "Bernkastel" has been eliminated, and until 1996 the winery was not functioning. In 1996, three comrades - Richard and Carl Lindner and Chris Bitter, whose family for several generations lived in the Barossa, acquired the winery and resumed production under the name Langmeyl. Today the company is a leading manufacturer of premium wines in Australia.
